A big shimmering blue bus was the first thing that greeted people going on the gay history tour of Kansas City.
LGBT student service coordinator David Greene conducted the tours and told students the history of each tour site.
Kansas City was one of the first places in the United States to serve as a meeting place for gay men and women.
The tour began as the bus entered a place familiar to all UMKC students: the Plaza. In the '50s, the Plaza was not the site of brightly-lit shops and busy pedestrians. It used to be a rather shady area on the outskirts of town, and it was one of the centers for gay men to meet.
As the tour continued, we learned Westport has a similar past.
Some of the first drag shows performed in this area took place at clubs along Broadway Street.
